Roshan Bhatta, Daayitwa-Credit Information Bureau Nepal Public Policy Fellow 2023,7th August,2023,

Name

The name "Roshan" (रोसन) means "bright," "illuminated," or "shining" in Sanskrit. It signifies a radiant and luminous personality. The surname "Bhatta" (भट्ट) is commonly found among the Brahmin community in Nepal and India. It is derived from the Sanskrit word "Bhatta," which means "priest" or "scholar." In the Nepalese context, the name "Bhatta" is often associated with individuals from the Brahmin caste who traditionally held priestly or learned positions.

Combining these meanings, the name "Roshan Bhatta" can be interpreted as someone who shines brightly and possesses knowledge or scholarly qualities. It reflects a person who is intellectually inclined and radiates a sense of brightness or enlightenment. I don’t know how much my name aligns with the essence of my work and the embodiment of my being. This is a question I encounter all time. I think I am moving one step closer to the meaning that my name possess.

Self-Introduction

I serve as a living example to the dynamic nature of identity within the vast fabric of existence. Our sense of self becomes fluid in a society where there are so many different perspectives and personal interpretations, influenced by our own perspectives and others prospect towards us. At times, it can feel like we exist simultaneously in various contrasting roles, leaving us to ponder who we truly are. I embark on a journey of self-reflection through this blog, investigating the many facets of my identities and the ever-changing perspectives that shape them. My journey has been formed by reflection, life experiences, education, my upbringing, my dear brothers and sisters, my dear friends and the ever-evolving perceptions. I originate from the stunning landscapes of Nepal's Far Western Province, notably the intriguing district of Baitadi.

My identity is a perfect blend of my passion, life encounters, and the ever-changing landscapes of my inner self as a human being, an aspiring photographer, a contemplative walker, a committed researcher, and a trained economist. Join me on this journey of self-discovery as I navigate the juncture where I meet the essence of my existence.

The Dance of Identities and Ever Evolving Self

Human beings are not fixed entities defined by a singular identity. Instead, we are continually evolving, influenced by the time we were born, influenced by the geography, our surrounding environment, our experiences, and the diverse roles we play in life. I am an economist by training, a self-proclaimed photographer, walker, and researcher who effortlessly represents the diversity of human existence. I believe that personal development and transformation are constant companions on the path to self-discovery. My identity expands as I explore new paths, discover new ideas, and confront my own beliefs, adapting to the shifting landscapes of my inner world. It is in this state of continual evolution that I find myself—an intersection of introspection, self-reflection, and acceptance. I encourage all to embrace fluidity and recognize that our identities are merely costumes we wear on life's stage.

Human Essence

Among the multitude roles and identities that I play, I honestly identify as a human being first and foremost. This essential component of my being transcends societal labels, cultural labels, religious convictions, and professional titles. I recognize the universal thread that connects all humanity together, embracing the virtues of empathy, compassion, and respect that define our shared human experience. This deep awareness of humanity is a guiding light in my relationships, pursuits, and contributions to the world.

A Pursuer of Knowledge

Academic pursuits have been an integral part of my journey. As a trained economist from Hunan University and Kathmandu University, my identity is deeply intertwined with the field of economics. I recognized the power of knowledge and its ability to shape perspectives and transform lives. This academic journey not only equipped myself with a deeper understanding of economic principles but also fostered critical thinking and analytical skills that I currently teach as a visiting faculty member at Kathmandu University School of Arts. As a visiting faculty member at Kathmandu University's School of Arts, I have the opportunity to share my knowledge and passion for economics to the next generation of students. I intend to inspire students to become agents of change in their communities and beyond by equipping them with economic literacy, critical thinking skills, and an appreciation for the power of visual storytelling. Through my expertise, I hope to shed light on the socioeconomic complexities that shape societies and impact the lives of individuals.

I believe in incorporating artistic elements into my teaching to foster a holistic understanding of the subject. By intertwining economic principles with real-world examples from literature, film, and photography, I encourage my students to develop a multidimensional perspective. Whether it's a novel that delves into the human cost of economic policies or a cinema that portrays the struggles of underprivileged communities or the films that focus on essence of human being or the films about the human as well as economic costs of wars, each experience deepens the understanding of the world we live in. This approach not only enhances their comprehension of economics but also nurtures their creativity and critical thinking skills.

The Aspiring Photographer

My love for photography provides a creative outlet that allows me to delve into the realm of visual storytelling, inviting viewers to see the world through my eyes. While economics provides a profound analytical foundation, it often remains confined to academic circles, leaving a gap between scholars and the wider public. To bridge this gap and communicate the essence of economic insights and observations effectively, I have discovered the immense power of visual storytelling.

As a reader and film enthusiast, I have come to appreciate the ability of photography and cinema to capture moments, evoke emotions, and convey powerful narratives. By combining passion for economics with visual mediums, I aim to break down complex economic concepts into relatable stories that resonate with people from all walks of life. Through the lens of my iPhone, I have embarked on a visual exploration of the world around me. I capture images that depict the struggles and triumphs of individuals, the beauty of diverse cultures, and the socio-economic landscapes that shape societies. Each photograph tells a unique story, offering a glimpse into the lives of people who often go unheard. This creative pursuit not only enables me to document the beauty that surrounds us but also serves as a form of introspection, allowing myself to explore my own emotions and observations. Moreover, I believe that cinema possesses the ability to touch hearts, challenge perspectives, and inspire change. By utilizing this medium, I aspire to create documentaries and films that shed light on economic realities, raising awareness and igniting conversations that lead to meaningful transformations.

The Meeting Place with Oneself

The meeting place with oneself is found when the external roles and identities fade away and we connect with our true essence. In the hustle and bustle of everyday life, I find solace in the simple act of walking. It is during these walks that I find comfort, inspiration, a deep sense of connection with my surroundings and become one with the rhythm of my steps. The rhythmic pattern of footsteps allows me to disconnect from the chaotic world and reconnect with my inner self. During these walks, I explore the landscapes of my thoughts, ponder the complexities of life, and find inspiration for my photography and research.

Walking has become a pathway to self-discovery and a meeting place with my inner self. Walking becomes a metaphorical journey, guiding myself towards a greater understanding of my own desires, values, and purpose in life. In these moments, I transcend the boundaries of my various roles and experiences, a profound connection with my inner self and transcend the constraints imposed by outward identities and societal constructs.

Conclusion

My identity encompasses the harmonious integration of various roles and passions. As a human being, I navigate the world with empathy and compassion, recognizing the common thread that binds us all. I am privileged to navigate this realm and witness the magic that unfolds when these identities converge. By embracing both the analytical rigor of economics and the creative expressions of the arts, we gain a richer understanding of our society and open doors to innovative solutions. So let us continue to explore, question, and appreciate the interconnectedness of these fascinating realms, and the transformative power they hold. Remember, economics is not just numbers and graphs; it is a story waiting to be told through the lens of art.

As we navigate the web of our identities, it becomes evident that we are neither solely defined by others' perceptions nor constrained by their limitations. Instead, we find strength in embracing the multifaceted nature of our being. Our true identity lies not in the judgments of others, but in the amalgamation of experiences, roles, and values that make us unique. Let us celebrate the diversity within us and honor the complexities that shape our existence.

Milky Way Galaxy of which we all are part of is moving through space at 2.1 million kilometers an hour. And that is without taking into account the effects of the earth’s rotation on its own axis (1600 kilometers an hour at the equator and zero at the poles), its orbiting around the sun (107,000 km an hour) and the sun’s journey around the Milky Way (792,000 Kilometers an hour). So, in the roughly 2-3 minutes that it would have taken you to read the paragraph above, you have already moved thousands of kilometers without even knowing it! Similarly, our thoughts are constantly evolving, our experiences are changing with time, with constantly evolving thoughts, ever changing experiences and roles, the identity of oneself is never stagnant rather "fluid".

So, who am I?

Who are we?
